HOPE: Business for Good
HOPE is an impact company that donates 100% of its profits towards education. The Philippines’ first B Corporation, HOPE has built over 100 classrooms around the country primarily through the sale of its bottled water product, Hope in a Bottle.
In 2018, HOPE put forward an audacious goal to offset 100% of its plastic footprint in a way that was environmentally forward, but also a practical and scaleable solution – and they did it. HOPE realized that if a small business with low margins like itself could do it, surely other companies could, too.
While HOPE was key to the establishment of Plastic Credit Exchange (PCEx), PCEx has since set a new standard for HOPE to take the boldest action available for cleaner, plastic-free oceans. Through its stringent audit process, PCEx has instilled in HOPE a new discipline to be mindful of its plastic usage and target plastic reduction strategically. PCEx has provided HOPE with much needed assurance that its sustainability goals are indeed being met and could be traced down to the last gram of plastic.

In a move to address the mounting plastic waste crisis, the Plastic Credit Exchange (PCEx), together with the City of Manila, and with the support of the PepsiCo Foundation recently introduced the Aling Tindera Waste-to-Cash program.

Under the Aling Tindera program, PCEx incentivizes women-owned sari-sari stores to become collection points for post-consumer plastic waste and establishes the community infrastructure for the aggregating, storing, and efficient transport of the waste to partner processing facilities. Among the many benefits of this project are: increased income opportunities for women micro-entrepreneurs and city residents; a more organized informal sector of waste collectors; cleaner environments and improved health.

PepsiCo Corporate Affairs Head for the Philippines and Asia, Anne Marie Corominas said: “PepsiCo realizes no single organization or industry can solve the plastic waste challenge on their own. That is why we’re working with PCEx and communities in Manila through the Aling Tindera program to accelerate systemic change and meaningful progress through collaborative, holistic and sustainable solutions in the Philippines.”
Nestlé Philippines
Acting on its commitment to reduce its plastic footprint, food and beverage manufacturer Nestlé Philippines has partnered with Plastic Credit Exchange (PCEx) to recover post-consumer plastic waste from communities, consolidators, and local government units. Through its initial pledge, Nestlé Philippines will be diverting plastic waste from landfills through PCEx, in pursuit of its environmental commitment.

Nestlé Philippines is also participating in the Aling Tindera Waste-to-Cash program in which women with sari-sari store owners will be provided with incentives for their stores to become collection points for post-consumer plastic waste. In this grassroots program, each participating sari-sari store will be equipped with a container van to store plastic waste turned in for cash.

“We are determined to look at every option to solve complex packaging challenges and embrace multiple solutions that can have an impact now. For our part, we at Nestlé envision a waste-free future in the face of these complex challenges. We are glad to be taking a concrete step, among many, toward realizing that vision through our partnership with PCEx,” Nestlé Philippines Chairman and CEO Kais Marzouki said.
